This manta ray sculpture is carved from a wonderful piece of elm burr wood.  Burr wood is beautiful but difficult to get hold of and a devil to carve.  The burrs you sometimes see bursting out from the side of the trunks of trees are caused by some kind of irritation or disease and creates these wonderful chaotic swirls and knots within the wood.  You can see more about burr wood in my blog.
