Inspiration

I have always been interest in all aspects of the natural world including (but not limited to) the sciences of physics and maths. “Strange Attractor” was inspired by the representation created in 3 dimensional space of the mathematical description of a chaotic system (for example: weather systems, fluid dynamics and neural networks). I was first intrigued by the subject over 30 years ago when reading about the Lorenz Attractor (discovered by Edward Lorenz in the 1960s while studying atmospheric convection). Ever since, I have been interested in forms of the strange attractor and for a long time I’ve wanted to produce a sculpture based on some of the complex forms created when plotting these chaotic systems.
This particular sculpture takes inspiration from the Halvorsen Attractor. The Halvorsen attractor is often visualized by plotting its values over time, which produces intricate, self-repeating patterns in three-dimensional space. These patterns are characteristic of chaotic systems and demonstrate its unpredictability, complexity and sensitivity to initial conditions.
