About the Sculpture
Strange Attractor II is hand carved from birch plywood and stands 34 cms in height. It is finished with a combination of waxoil and wax.
Inspiration
Inspired by the plotted form of a Halvorsen attractor, this sculpture explores the unexpected beauty that can emerge from mathematical systems. A Halvorsen attractor is a type of “strange attractor”: a three-dimensional pattern generated by a set of equations describing a chaotic system. Although the path never repeats exactly, it remains drawn towards a recognisable, structured form.
The sculpture is constructed from laminated birch plywood, whose flowing layers accentuate the movement, folds and interconnected passages within the piece. I am fascinated by the intriguing forms found in mathematics and physics, and by the possibilities of translating these abstract ideas into tangible sculptural objects.
