Giant Manta I is hand-carved from birch plywood and selectively stained with ink to capture the distinctive markings of these remarkable sea creatures. I use ink rather than paint, as it soaks into the wood — staining the fibres — instead of sitting on the surface as paint would. This allows the layered structure of the plywood to remain visible through the stain. The sculpture is mounted on an acrylic base to create a more “suspended” feel.
