This manta ray sculpture is carved from a small but wonderful piece of elm burr wood.  Burr wood is beautiful but difficult to get hold of and a devil to carve.  The burrs you sometimes see bursting out from the side of the trunks of trees are caused by some kind of irritation or disease and creates these wonderful chaotic swirls and knots within the wood.  You can see more about burr wood in my blog.

“Seeing a Manta ray in the wild is still on my ‘to do’ list. I have dived in many places around the world and have had several near misses, but so far they have remained elusive. From my point of view, the next best thing is to sculpt one. Although this piece is carved from a relatively small piece of elm burr, the beautiful figuring in the wood makes for a wonderful combination subject and material.
