About the Sculpture
“Pop Art?” is carved from ash wood taken from a tree that fell on local farmland a few years ago. Designed to be wall-mounted (using the plate on the back—the six-inch nail is purely visual), the piece playfully echoes a childhood “gravity-defying” trick: rubbing a balloon on a jumper and pressing it to a wall. When the balloon is rubbed, electrons move from the fabric to the balloon, giving it a negative charge. The balloon’s electric field repels electrons in the wall and draws positive charges toward the surface, creating an electrostatic attraction strong enough to hold it in place.
I added the question mark to the title because the work is not Pop Art—both because it doesn’t fit the genre and because, despite the apparent nail, the balloon has emphatically not popped.
