“Orca” is hand carved from birch plywood and selectively stained with ink. The sculpture is mounted on a clear acrylic base.

“Orca” shows an adolescent male killer whale (Orcinus orca) as it casually sideswipes a school of fish. This behavior is intended to stun multiple prey so that the whale can turn and collect the fish with little effort. I have had a lot of personal experience with orcas in the past and have been lucky enough to have swum with them in the wild off the coast of Norway. They have always been my favourite marine mammal.
