About the Sculpture
Hand carved from a single piece of sweet chestnut burr. A burr is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk that is filled with small knots from dormant buds. It is these features that make wood burrs so desirable for wood sculpture. “Spanish Dancer” is also available in birch plywood which also works well with the free flowing form of this design (click here for photos).
Inspiration
The spanish dancer is a type of sea slug (or nudibranch) that when disturbed can propel itself from the sea floor and swim by way of its’ undulating fringe. “From the first moment I saw footage of one swimming in this way (probably a David Attenborough production) I knew that one day I just had to carve that sculptural form”.
