This life size carving of an Ibis  Skull is carved from a single piece of Elm burr (or burl) A burr is the trees reaction to some kind of stress (damage, fungal attack, etc) and leads to the most amazing swirling patterns within the wood. A real pleasure to carve.

Myself and my wife (Lesley) have had many trips to Africa and have spent time watching Ibis on several occasions. A very elegant bird with a long, yet relatively sturdy beak. Just the subject I was looking for when I came across this piece of Elm burr in my stores.
