When designing the abstract sculpture “Pinned”, I wanted to try and surprise the viewer with a contrast between the visual texture of the sculpture and the expected physical properties of material from (Ash Wood) which it is made.  I hope it makes the viewer question the material in front of them – and maybe take a second look.

Science and the natural world has been my major inspirations over the years, but as my work has evolved I find myself attempting to convey more of the essence of a subject than the rich detail, in order to create a more stylized piece. Alternatively I like to experiment with the purely abstract or take inspiration from mathematics or other areas of science that conjure interesting forms. With “Pinned”, I started by pushing some large safety pins through various parts of an old pillow to see what kind of effects I could achieve.
