About the Sculpture
This kingfisher bronze has a beautifully coloured patination. Patination is a traditional heat and chemical process that colours the surface of the bronze, and each piece is patinated individually by hand. For more information on how a bronze sculpture is produced see the “About the Sculpture” page. You can see another of Bill’s bronze kingfisher sculptures here.
I have been blessed with frequent sightings of kingfishers. I used to see them regularly as a boy in our neighbouring park and now our local bird reserve provides us with excellent views of kingfishers. If we arrive early in the morning, we may well see one (or sometimes a pair), sitting on their favourite perch, gazing at the water and occasionally making a quick dart after a small fish. This diving kingfisher sculpture depicts the bird in a posture so familiar to me. But I have to say, the fact that we quite often see kingfishers has never diminished the thrill I get when I see that familiar flash of iridescent blue.”
