About the Sculpture

Eagle Ray Sculpture
This eagle ray sculpture, hand-carved from oak burr wood, captures the elegance and grace of this magnificent marine creature. The intricate patterns of the oak burr grain mirror the natural beauty of the eagle ray’s flowing form, making each piece truly unique. Mounted on a sleek acrylic base, the sculpture evokes a sense of movement and life (please contact me if you would like to discuss the options for a different base material). Perfect as a centerpiece or a thoughtful gift for nature enthusiasts, it brings the ocean’s wonders into your space. Learn more about wild eagle rays here.

Inspiration

This particular sculpture was inspired by a piece of timber that I had been hanging onto for far too long, waiting for just the right commission to come along that would make perfect use of it. After about 4 years  of waiting, I decided to carve something that I wanted to do, and that would really show off some of the attributes of such a beautiful piece of burr. A tree burr, or burl, forms due to stress or injury, such as damage, infection, or environmental factors. This triggers abnormal growth in the tree, creating a knotted, textured wood grain. These unique formations often result from the tree’s healing process and produce highly prized wood for carving and art. It can be very difficult to get hold of sizeable pieces of burr, and you never know how each piece is going to look. For a little more info, take a look at this post I wrote a while ago.
