Hatching Turtle
In this stage-by-stage video I show how to carve a small, okimono-style hatching turtle from pear wood. The process follows a methodical workflow: blocking out the main forms, then “creeping up” on the detail in clear, logical steps. You’ll see how to establish the shell and opening, shape the head and fore limbs as they emerge, manage grain direction in pear wood, and refine edges for a clean result. It’s a focused, incremental approach that helps you build accuracy and control while producing a neat, display-ready carving.

13mm number 1 straight chisel

3mm 45 degree straight v-tool
Swann Morton number 4 scaplel handle with number 26 blade
Abrasive: grades 180, 240, 320, 400.
Finish Used:
Liberon Finishing oil and Liberon Black Bison fine wax polishing paste. (golden pine).
