About the Sculpture
Chimp skull is carved from the contemporary medium of birch plywood (for more information on this method, please see “about the sculptures“). This is a very tactile piece and is design to be removed from the base so enabling the contours to be fully appreciated while being explored with the hands.
Skulls conjure up something of a dichotomy of emotions within me. They are a very powerful symbol of death, extinction and the fragility of life (or of a species), yet at the same time, a skull can make a very beautiful, sculptural form – ‘hewn’ over millennia by the forces of evolution. This particular piece was inspired by one of my trips to Congo. I was lucky enough to encounter a troop of chimpanzees while spending a month or so in remote rainforest. A beautiful moment. This contrasted starkly with sights in the markets of Brazzaville where the remains of their kin and close relatives formed just another part of the bush meat industry. So carving this skull has brought back some mixed memories.
