About the Sculpture
This marine sculpture was hand carved from a single piece of sweet chestnut burr. A burr is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk that is filled with small knots from dormant buds. It is these features that make wood burrs so desirable for wood sculpture. “Bermudan Sloop” forms part of Bill’s marine art collection; another example of which can be seen here.
“I have enjoyed several sailing trips in the past, and was always inspired by the many interesting shapes formed by the sails in the wind. The beautiful figuring in the grain of this particular piece of wood lent itself to the expanses of smooth curves within this sculpture”.
